Located in the western hills of Connecticut, Hunt Hill Farm encompasses a significant collection of well-preserved farm architecture historically associated with the development of the dairy industry during the 19th century. Originally created by combining two historic New Milford farms, Hine Farm and Buckingham Farm, Hunt Hill Farm is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
While on a visit to New Milford, Connecticut, Skitch Henderson, founder of the New York Pops orchestra, long-time Musical Director of the NBC Orchestra and beloved radio & television personality, and his wife Ruth, a writer, chef and entrepreneur, fell in love with the property and purchased it in 1968. Building by building, they converted the two farms into a much-beloved cooking school, art gallery, museum and kitchen store. People came from all over to experience the historic collection of buildings and their unique transformation into new uses.
In 2003, Hunt Hill Farm became a 501(c ) (3) non-profit organization. Concurrently, 83 acres of Hunt Hill Farm were preserved by the Hendersons, in collaboration with the Town of New Milford, the US Department of Agriculture, CT Department of Environmental Protection, the Trust for Public Land, and the Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust. This 83 acre gift to the Town of New Milford created a portion of Hunt Hill Farm which is managed as town open space and active farmland. An additional 44 acres of Hunt Hill Farm were protected in 2016. As a result of these gifts to the town, The Hendersons have left a legacy of natural beauty as a place that New Milford residents can learn, experience and enjoy.
With the passing of its founders – Skitch in 2005 and Ruth in 2014 – Hunt Hill Farm is undergoing yet another transformation. The board recently approved a new mission: “To cultivate love of land, food and the arts” and is working with staff to develop compelling new programming that will engage residents of the surrounding community with The Silo Cooking School as its anchor.
Hunt Hill Farm is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating a love of land, food and the arts. Through educational programs and innovative classes, we highlight the role of the kitchen as a hub to strengthen individual, family and community bonds. We value connection-the old-fashioned kind-and look to inspire change using the culinary, artistic and outdoor environments as experiential conduits for a more creative and peaceful world.
